Situated 5 miles north of Whitby, Runswick Bay is a picture-postcard seaside village loved by both artists and holidaymakers. The village is split into two parts – a number of houses at the top of the cliffs contrast sharply with the red-roofed cottages that appear to tumble down the cliffside to the seafront below.

The beach can be accessed via a steep 1 in 4 road with an accessible car park at the bottom. It has been frequently awarded the ENCAMS Seaside Award and if appropriate will be flying the distinctive blue and yellow flag.

Kettleness Point in on the far side of the bay and has been the scene of many shipwrecks. In 1901 the lifeboat was launched and manned entirely by women as their men were caught in a treacherous storm. The old thatched coastguard's cottage, lifeboat house and boat-park still stand at the edge of the village, but only by good fortune and sea defences.
