This delightful part of Yorkshire is well supplied with rivers and lakes. Although the rivers are very natural, many of the lakes are man-made. Two of the main rivers are the Esk and Derwent.

The River Derwent rises high on the moors near Scarborough. Its path to the sea was blocked during the Ice Age, so it runs back inland, flowing through the North Yorkshire countryside to meet the River Ouse between York and Goole.

The beautiful River Esk is located mainly in the North York Moors National Park. It also starts in the moors but flows down through picturesque villages to the sea at Whitby and is noted for its Sea Trout and Salmon.

Wykeham lakes, situated around the village of Wykeham are a popular attraction. Activities available include sailing, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing and scuba diving as well as walking and bird-watching.Take a walk and enjoy the natural beauty of these and many other lakes around the area.
